Microsoft was blindsided by OpenAI’s ouster of CEO Sam Altman

Microsoft bought a 49% stake in OpenAI at the start of 2023. When Sam Altman seemed very much like the new archetype of a CEO for our AI-powered future. That came crashing down today – and Microsoft had no warning. Per Axios:

Microsoft, which has invested billions in OpenAI, learned that OpenAI was ousting CEO Sam Altman just a minute before the news was shared with the world, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Given Microsoft’s ownership stake in OpenAI, this makes the move appear even more precipitous – and deeply concerning. Right now we don’t have any understanding of why Altman got fired.
