Federal Trade Commission Launches Inquiry Into A.I. Deals by Tech Giants

The New York Times reports that the US Federal Trade Commission will be taking a close look at investments by the Big Tech companies in some key AI startups:

These deals have allowed the big companies to form deep ties with their smaller rivals while dodging most government scrutiny. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, while Amazon and Google have each committed billions of dollars to Anthropic, another leading A.I. start-up.

The FTC is trying to get ahead of any monopolistic activities by Big Tech. But I reckon they’d need a time machine to do that job comprehensively…
