We need new infrastructure, tools, and experience before we can realize the wholly new applications LLMs allow. But in the meantime, the relatively boring applications of Sober AI are so valuable that it’s worth our time and attention.

The bots — with names like LazyApply and Massive — have turned job hunting into a technological arms race. You pay a fee, feed your résumé into the bot, tell it what you’re looking for, and blam! — it starts sending out hundreds of applications on your behalf, often in real time.

New research suggests that prompt engineering is best done by the model itself, and not by a human engineer.

Copilot is surprisingly easy to use. The tool adopts the casual chatbot style so it’s easy to prompt and accessible even to non-tech workers. Workers can ask the bot to summarise documents or turn them into PowerPoints or spreadsheets with a few clicks.
“This is giving me the ability for responding to every single annoying buying inquiry that I have to deal with … and it is giving me the ability to create a bespoke customer empathetic engaging piece of communication that’s going to stand me in good stead in front of that buyer.”
Panelists urged the audience not to fear the impact that generative tools might have. “My team and I are taking this really seriously,” said Chitra Gopalakrishnan, Microsoft’s partner director of compliance. “From development to deployment, all of these features go through rigorous ethical analysis, impact analysis, as well as risk mitigation.”
Participants with access to the large language model GPT-4 completed 12.2% more tasks on average and completed tasks 25.1% more quickly than those without access to AI, the study conducted in tandem with Boston Consulting Group found.
